Moving to the Bahamas in 2026: practical realities and the island choice

For genuine Bahamas relocation, which island matters more than people expect. Here's the practical picture.

The Bahamas is an archipelago - around 700 islands and cays, of which a few dozen are inhabited. For genuine cross-border movers, the question isn't just "the Bahamas" - it's which island and what kind of life that island supports. The practical realities below come up.

The main islands for movers

New Providence (Nassau) - the population centre, the capital, the financial district, the medical centre, the largest schools. Most cross-border-mover infrastructure is here.

Paradise Island (connected to New Providence) - resort and lifestyle area with high-end housing.

Grand Bahama (Freeport) - second-largest urban area, free-trade zone, distinct economic structure.

The "Out Islands" (Eleuthera, Abaco, Exuma, Long Island, others) - quieter, smaller communities, varying levels of expat presence, lighter infrastructure.

The island choice shapes everything downstream: housing market, schools, healthcare access, connectivity, professional services, community.

Schools

International schools concentrate in Nassau / New Providence with a smaller market in Grand Bahama. The Out Islands have very limited international school access. For families with school-age children, this is the binding constraint.

Healthcare

Major healthcare facilities are in Nassau / New Providence and Grand Bahama. Specialist care often involves the US (typically Florida) for cases needing more than the local system provides. International private cover with US coverage is sensible.

Connectivity

Lynden Pindling International Airport (Nassau) has dense connectivity to the US east coast, the UK, and regional Caribbean. Grand Bahama has its own international airport. Out-island connectivity is via regional / small-aircraft routes.

Housing

A mature real-estate market with depth for international buyers. Quality at the upper end is at international standards. Prices reflect that.

Cost

The Bahamas is not a low-cost destination. Standard Caribbean import premium is amplified by the geographic spread of the archipelago. Out-island costs can be higher than Nassau due to logistics.

What we tell movers

  • Choose the island deliberately - New Providence is the practical default for most cases needing infrastructure.
  • Plan healthcare around US-proximity arrangements.
  • For families, prioritise schools in the island choice.
  • Visit before committing to extended presence on a specific Out Island.
  • Budget for the archipelago premium.
  • Build cross-border arrangements from day one.

The Bahamas works as a genuine relocation. The island choice is more than half the decision.
